NATURAL CONCRETE RETARDER

FROM SUGARCANE BAGASSE

SECURITY GLAZING FOR CRIME

PREVENTION

In construction activity, concrete need to be mixed

with chemical retarder to prolong the setting

time. According to Building Specification 2005

and literature, concrete can set or hardened in 2

hours. Therefore, for the usage of transportation

and limited pouring time especially in the area

that far from concrete plant, chemical retarder

has been put to retard the hardened process. In

this research, the retarder that being promoted

is sugarcane bagasse. The main composition of

sugarcane is the Sucrose (C12H22O11). This

content looks like similar in chemical content

for concrete retarder. Concrete retarder is an

admixture used to prolong concrete setting time

for the used of far concrete delivery and more

time needed in concreting work. This testing to

evaluate the effectiveness of sugarcane bagasse

as a concrete retarder. By using Vicat apparatus

for a penetration test, it can compare the time

taken between normal mortar and mortar with

sugarcane bagasse to set. A few samples were

prepared from the sugarcane bagasse in some

percentage by water/cement ratio of mortar. The

sucrose level will be measured by refractometer

in different mix design. This product will promote

the sustainable waste material as non chemical

adding material in concrete as a retarder. Several

tests have been made and the result show that

the concrete can be hardened between 4-5 hours

without decreasing the strength. The product

that will be promoted is sugarcane bagasse in

concrete with various sucrose content levels and

the testing procedure that is being done.

Glazing product is developed to provide credible

physical protection against lower security threat

levels that are commonly faced by the general

public nowadays, for both personnel and

properties. This product is able to withstand

heavy physical attacks, by criminal elements

using common handtools to defeat any forcible

entry attempts into houses, premises or display

showcases. This product is a laminated glass

make ups for application on windows, and doors,

that is strong enough to resist a considerable

number of heavy impacts from such tools that will

ever deter the efforts of a determined intruder.

This laminated glass is fabricated with two layers

of normal glass and is bonded with specially

formulated chemical resin that has high UV

absorption property in the middle of the laminated

glass. This security glazing can be as thin as 7.5

mm overall and incrementally increased to offer

higher impact resistance against more severe

threats. Various strength and impact tests to meet

the International Standards, for example a drop ball

test of 4.1 kg steel sphere with height of 3 metres

or higher (a German DIN Standard), has certified to

this product performance levels. Homes, premises

and other buildings which are installed with such

glazing system can now realistically enhance

overall security measures besides increasing the

aesthetical aspects. People who are using such

glazing system have essentially overcome everyday

criminal activities and provide higher qualtiy of life.

We can now live peacefully in our house without

being surrounded by iron grills.
